Dual-SIM HTC One Max for China Unicom leaked, may pack a fingerprint reader

DualSIM HTC One Max for China Unicom leaked, may pack a fingerprint reader
Much like HTC itself, leaksters have also been hard at work to help promote this company. Courtesy of ePrice, the latest spy shots feature the upcoming 5.9-inchOne Max, and specifically, this is a dual-SIM model destined for China Unicom. Like the One Dual (or better known as 802w, 802t or 802d in China), this much bigger device sports a removable metallic back cover for access to the dual SIM slots, along with what appears to be a microSD slot at the top right corner. There are also a set of docking pins towards the bottom right on the back, so chances are we'll see official dock accessories for this bad boy.

More interestingly, below the camera you'll find a square hole, which seems to be reserved for a fingerprint scanner (our understanding is that it's common for HTC prototypes to have missing components during development). In fact, last week the same website released a sketchy photo that showed a One Max with the square hole occupied, but the latest shots are more convincing albeit without the component. Regardless, this is further supported by the presence of a "Fingerprint" button on the quick settings menu (which has also gained an edit button for rearranging things), as shown above.

Last but not least, it looks like HTC's experimenting with dual-camera capture functionality. Like on the LG Optimus G Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S 4, you can move and resize the second viewfinder, but right now it is limited to just a simple rectangular shape. Until the rumored "end of October" launch date, you can head over to ePrice for more spy shots.

Nokia announces the 515, an aluminum Series 40 phone for $150

Nokia 515 is an aluminum Series 40 phone for $150
Do you have a hankering for an elegant featurephone but disappointed by the lack of attention the market pays to your particular demographic? Nokia's here to rescue you with the 515, a candybar Series 40 handset which has a chassis crafted with anodized aluminum, a 2.4-inch QVGA LCD panel covered with Gorilla Glass 2 and a keypad that features a new type of polycarbonate resin. The device measures 11mm thick and offers a 5MP rear camera with LED flash, 256MB internal storage, microSD support up to 32GB, Bluetooth 3.0, HD Voice and USB tethering, and will begin its global rollout next month in Russia, Germany, Switzerland and Poland. It has dualband HSDPA (900 / 2100) and quadband GSM / EDGE and will come in both single and dual-SIM flavors. The suggested retail price for such a package? 115 EUR ($150), which makes it more expensive than most Asha phones andfeaturephones currently on the market. It's interesting to see Nokia push pricier models with a premium feel, but if there are plenty of places in which this kind of phone is wanted and encouraged, why deprive consumers?

Facebook releases cross-platform SDK for Unity titles, looks to boost 3D and mobile gaming

If the folks from Facebook and Unity have their way, you -- and everyone you know -- will be playing mobile 3D titles directly on the social network. The two companies have been working together since March to boost user engagement with games on Facebook, and a cross-platform SDK released today should go a long way toward reaching a broader audience. Available for download via Unity's developer site, the new kit lets devs port their mobile games to Facebook.com and integrate social experiences -- such as posting achievements to your Timeline -- into core titles, regardless of whether gamers are on Android, iOS or the web. And the companies are making this process quite easy for devs; bringing titles to several platforms only requires a line of code.
A handful of games, including Cmune's UberStirke, Madfinger's Shadowgun: Deadzone and Nival's King's Bounty: Legions, have already incorporated the new SDK, and Unity is no doubt hoping that other devs will follow suit. This isn't the first time the gaming engine has extended a helping hand to developers -- it's beenknown to drop licensing fees, for instance. Here's hoping this means a wider selection of Facebook titles is just around the corner.

Three launching 4G in London, Birmingham and Manchester in December

Three launching 4G in London, Birmingham and Manchester in December
Since today's the day that Vodafone and O2 launch their 4G networks, Three has piped up to remind you that its own LTE rollout isn't too far behind. Customers in London, Birmingham and Manchester will be getting an early Christmas present when the service goes live at some point in December. As promised back inFebruary, existing customers with LTE-ready devices won't pay extra, nor will they lose their unlimited data allowance. The network is promising to be in 50 cities by the end of 2014 and cover 98 percent of the population by the end of 2015. After all, Dave Dyson's a mobile executive who likes to take things slow.

Android VP Hugo Barra leaves Google, joins Chinese phone maker Xiaomi (updated)

Barely a month after he was showing off Google's new Nexus 7 tablet Hugo Barra is departing to join Xiaomi, according to AllThingsD. Part of Google since March 2008, as the Vice President of product management for Android he's been a regular face to anyone that's watched Google I/O events and Nexus product launches over the past few years. With his exit Barra follows Android creator Andy Rubin, who stepped away from the Android team three months earlier. It's a huge score forXiaomi, a company that goes from strength to strength in China, with smartphones that run on a heavily customized (and customizable) Android ROM. The company's also dabbled in smart TV boxes, which could make for a very familiar role for aformer GooglerAccording to Xiaomi, he will be in charge of steering the company'sglobal expansion starting in October.
Update: We have received a statement from Google that confirms Hugo Barra's departure:
"We wish Hugo Barra the best. We'll miss him at Google and we're excited that he is staying within the Android ecosystem."
Update 2: Barra's taken to Google+ to announce that he will indeed be joining Xiaomi as VP Global in a few weeks. We've added his blog post after the break and have updated the post to reflect the confirmation. Xiaomi has also confirmed the appointment.
A new Android chapter
After nearly 5½ years at Google and almost 3 years as a member of the Android team - the most amazing group of people I've ever worked with in my life - I have decided to start a new career chapter.
In a few weeks, I'll be joining the Xiaomi team in China to help them expand their incredible product portfolio and business globally - as Vice President, Xiaomi Global. I'm really looking forward to this new challenge, and am particularly excited about the opportunity to continue to help drive the Android ecosystem.
It has been an amazing ride and true honor to be part of the Android team at Google, and I especially want to thank +Andy Rubin , +Hiroshi Lockheimer , +Sundar Pichai and +Vic Gundotra for their phenomenal support and mentorship over the years.
+Android team, I will truly miss you all!

Nokia's giant Lumia 1520 reportedly poses for the camera

Nokia's giant Lumia 1520 reportedly poses for the camera with a custom case
Rumors are circulating that Nokia's first extra-large smartphone, possibly called the Lumia 1520, is near launch. If it's real, you might be looking at it -- Windows Phone Central has obtained a photo that purportedly shows the device for the first time. The snapshot presents a behemoth that makes even the Lumia 1020 look dainty. Unfortunately, there's little to corroborate claims that a quad-core processor, a 20-megapixel camera and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 lurk inside. We've also seen a previous fake that looks like this, although the new phone's bezel both matches that from a July part rumor and carries the prototype stamp common to Nokia test units. When there's talk of Nokia unveiling the 1520 in late September alongside aWindows tablet, we may learn the truth behind the photo within a few weeks.

Samsung to show off 98-inch Ultra HD video wall, 31.5-inch 4K monitor at IFA 2013

Samsung
As surely as there will be another round of tradeshows this fall and winter, companies like Samsung will be there with bigger and better tech to show off, which consists of new 4K displays this time around. At IFA 2013, Samsung plans to show off this 98-inch commercial Ultra HD "video wall", as well as a 31.5-inch Ultra HD monitor. Samsung unveiled its 85-inch UHDTV at CES earlier this year it promised sizes would grow so we're not surprised it's combining slim-bezeled versions to create this massive screen headed to storefronts near you. There's no picture yet for the 31.5-inch monitor and few details, but Samsung is ready to battle with competition from the likes of ASUS and Sharp with detailed color calibration adjustments and support for 99 percent of Adobe's RGB space.

Tiny human brain models grown in lab with tiny cortex, tiny hippocampus (video)

Tiny human 'brains' grown in lab
Mouse brains were the first to be grown, but when it comes to discovering the inner workings of the human brain, as Juergen Knoblich of the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) in Austria put it: "mouse models don't cut it." The institute has managed to grow some adorable-sounding tiny human brain models that include parts of the cortex, hippocampus and retinas through stem cells. The lab-grown tissue will allow researchers to peer into the early stages of human brain development in far higher detail than ever before. Growing the little gray matter samples involved adult cells reprogrammed to behave like embryonic stem cells and giving them a cocktail of vital brain development nutrients.
In under a month, they had grown to between 3 and 4mm across, with several structures that are found in the fully-formed versions. Through imaging techniques, the scientists were even able to pick up neural activity -- we've added the video after the break. The models are already providing insights and new ideas on brain development. According to the New Scientist, if the researchers were able to adjust their techniques to include stem cells that develop into blood vessels, future models could offer more detailed knowledge on conditions like schizophrenia and autism.

How would you change Samsung's 13-inch Series 9?

DNP Samsung Series 9 review 13inch, mid2012
It's rare that a device gets the personal seal of approval from our reviews chief, but that's the the hallowed ground that Samsung's Series 9 gets to stand upon. It earned praise for its excellent build, battery life, display and performance, and our only gripe was a trackpad that needed a software tweak or two. The question is, outside of our testing laboratory, did it hold up to scrutiny? Did you buy one on our suggestion, and if so, how have you found it? Welcome to How Would You Change.

Insert Coin: Fos combines style and safety in a wearable Bluetooth LED display (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tipwith "Insert Coin" as the subject line.
Insert Coin Fos combines style and safety in a wearable Bluetooth LED display
Light-up clothing is all the rage, and a company called Erogear is upping the ante with Fos, a Bluetooth-enabled solution for style-conscious athletes. The brainchild of engineer Anders Nelson, Fos is a lightweight, Velcro-lined fabric strip of lights with a nifty customizable display. What sets it apart from Erogear's other wearable options is the fact that it's controlled by your mobile phone. The LED grid can be programmed to double as your very own turn signal (useful for nocturnal bike-riding), advertise sponsors or even brag about how many calories you've burned while running. Coming it at around 32 ounces (roughly the weight of a golf ball), this illuminated patch packs an LED matrix driver, 32-bit microprocessor, flash memory and a power supply in its 2mm profile. The Kickstarter campaign is offering a choice of three designs to backers: an 11 x 3 inch strip, an 11 x 5 inch version and a black leather belt for those times you feel like literally shining at the club. Though the demo package is currently Android-only, iOS and desktop versions are potentially on the horizon. A pledge of $125 will net you your very own Fos kit, and units are scheduled to start shipping in February of 2014, provided the campaign hits its $200,000 goal. To learn more, check out the video after the break or follow the source link to Kickstarter.

Oppo reveals more about N1's backside touch as pics leak out

Image
Buttons and trackpads on the back of mobile devices? It's becoming a trend. Oppo has revealed that users will be able to scroll, double click and long press with the backside touch feature of the forthcoming Oppo N1. Apparently it'll be possible to swipe through pages (or change songs), activate and control the camera or bind the actions to other apps as you see fit. At the same time, the N1's chassis has been snapped in this rather beautifully composed rumorgram shot, so you can see exactly what you'll be reaching around when this unit gets an official announcement in September.

Microsoft's employee-only white Xbox One colors us green with envy

Some Microsoft employees rumored to receive free white Xbox One, make us jealous
There are certainly benefits to working for Microsoft beyond a steady paycheck. We've seen the company gift employees with phones and tablets, and if the picture above proves legit, a lucky bunch will receive a free Xbox One on launch day -- in an exclusive white and silver-grey hue, no less. In addition to a console etched with "I made this" and "launch team something," they'll get one year of Xbox Live and all first-party games (if we're understanding "1P" correctly) gratis. According to the picture, which surfaced on NeoGAF's forums and Reddit, this special edition Xbone will be given to full-timers (as of July 12th this year) in MS's Interactive Entertainment Business who are still employed at launch. This is just a rumor, of course, but if some Photoshop trickster cooked this up, we'd think they'd go as far as making the Kinect white, if only for consistency. Or, maybe that's what we're supposed to think.

The good: The powerful Amped Wireless RTA15 router offers long Wi-Fi range, decent data speed, and a robust Web interface. The device is ready to work right out of the box.
The bad: Compared with similarly priced routers, the RTA15’s performance falls short, especially in terms of Wi-Fi signal stability.
The bottom line: The Amped Wireless RTA15 is a decent Wi-Fi router, but better firmware is needed for it to live up to its high cost and our expectation.
The RTA15 High Power Dual Band AC 700mW Wi-Fi router is the next step in Amped Wireless's quest for bringing great Wi-Fi range to its customers. The router packs even more power than the company's previous models and it's the first to support the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.
In my testing, it indeed offered very long range. Unfortunately the benefit of the large Wi-Fi coverage was, to some extent, canceled out by the signal's instability. The router's wireless data rates, though fast, were slower than those of similarly priced routers.
What the new device decidedly has going for itself are the well-thought-out Web interface, a nice feature set, and the ease of use. But at the current street price of some $190 -- more expensive than many more advanced routers -- the RTA15 is just too expensive for what it has to offer. For that amount of cash, general users can easily get a much better deal with one of those on this list.
Straightforward design, easy to set up
The RTA15 looks totally new compared with the R20000G, or the R10000G, coming in a typical design for a Wi-Fi router: a squarish box with three detachable high-gain antennas sticking up from its back.
The RTA15 comes with three detachable high-gain antennas each needs to be attached to its own place on the router.
The RTA15 comes with three detachable high-gain antennas each needs to be attached to its own place on the router.
(Credit: Dong Ngo/CNET)
Out of the box, these antennas are detached, but each of them comes with a number so you know which part of the router it's supposed to be attached to. Also on the back, the router comes with the usual four LAN ports (for wired clients) and one WAN port (to connect to an Internet source). All of these ports support Gigabit Ethernet, which offers a top speed of 1,000Mbps. There's also a USB 2.0 port to host a storage device (printers are not supported), and a recessed reset button that brings the router to its original factory settings.
On the front of the RTA15 is an array of LEDs showing the status of the ports on the back, the connection to the Internet, and the router's power. The router has four rubber feet and is designed to be put flat on a surface. It also comes with a small detachable base so that it can stay tilted at a 45-degree angle; you can also mount it on a wall.
Similar to the R20000G, the RTA15 comes with two LAN (CAT5) cables, one plugged into its WAN port and one plugged into one of its LAN ports. You just need to connect the cable in the WAN port to a broadband modem, and you are done. (The other LAN cable can be plugged into a computer that doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi, or you can just ignore it if all of your devices are Wi-Fi-enabled.) Now you can use the preconfigured wireless network information printed on the router's bottom to connect the devices to the network. The router also comes with a Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on the back that makes it possible to connect WPS-enabled clients to the network without having to know the preconfigured wireless network information at all.
If you want to further customize the router's default settings, such as changing the Wi-Fi network's name, Wi-Fi Protected Setup, or making guest networks, you will need to resort to the router's Web interface. To access the interface, just point a connected computer's browser to the router's default IP address, which is 192.168.3.1. The default log-in information is the wordadmin for both the username and password.
In all, the entire setup process is quick and self-explanatory, but if you run into problems, the router comes with a very clearly illustrated setup guide and a DVD of support materials for you to read and watch.

Excellent Web interface, good set of common features
The RTA15's Web interface is very similar to that of the previous model but now is much more refined and robust. The interface has a Dashboard, which is a set of wizards for novice users, and and More Settings section for advanced users who want to customize everything manually via granular menus.
The router is a true dual-band router, offering two main Wi-Fi networks for the two 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. On top of that you can create four more Wi-Fi networks for each band, making a total of 10 concurrent networks. While in most cases just two networks are enough, having more networks means you can customize each of them for different purposes, or use one for each Wi-Fi standard. You can also use these as guest networks by isolating their connected clients from the local resources.
The RTA15 comes with a lot of common features collectively found in other routers, such as firewall, Web filtering, quality of service, port forwarding, the support for dynamic DNS, and so on. Each of these features were well-thought-out and convenient to use.
Like the R20000G, the RTA15's network storage feature is simple. Once an external hard drive is plugged into the router's USB port, its entire content will be shared across the network with everybody having full access to it. There's no way to customize this. In addition to this simple sharing method, you can set up an FTP server targeting the external drive. In my trials, the USB port worked with external hard drives formatted in either NTFS or FAT file systems and was able to handle drives that already contained data, quickly sharing a drive's content with the rest of the network.
The RTA15 comes with a good set of features, including a QoS feature where you can manually assign an Internet bandwidth cap for specific clients.

Amped Wireless RTA15 High Power Dual Band AC 700mW Wi-Fi Router review:High-power, long range, but poor signal quality

Performance
Despite the fact this is a dual-stream router, I had high expectations for its performance, especially in terms of Wi-Fi range, and for the most part the router didn't deliver.
It did show great range, slightly longer than that of other higher-end three-stream 802.11ac routers. However, the signal quality was generally subpar. Farther away from the router, at 120 feet or more, it was generally hard to get a client connected, and when connected, the connection was finicky -- sometimes fast, others time slow, at the same spot.
A bit of a disclaimer: I tested the router at CNET's offices, where there are walls and many Wi-Fi devices that are out of my control. Generally, walls shorten the reach of Wi-Fi signal, and other Wi-Fi devices create interference that hinders the reviewed unit's stability. As with all Wi-Fi routers, your results may vary depending on where you live.

At closer distances, namely 15 feet and 100 feet away, the router did better. Its data rates weren't impressive on the chart, but this is mostly, again, because it's a dual-stream router, while most other recently reviewed routers are three-stream. Read more about Wi-Fi standards here.

When used with AC-enabled clients, the RTA15 scored 206Mbps at close range, faster than the other dual-stream router, the D-Link DGL-5500, and a few other three-stream routers. Quite impressive. When I moved the distance to 100 feet, it did even better at 166Mbps, right about average.
With 802.11n devices, on the 5GHz band, the router did terribly: 141Mbps and 65Mbps for the short and long distances, respectively, which was about at the bottom of the charts. On the 2.4GHz band, it did better: 75Mbps for short range and 32Mbps for long range, well above the average.

In all the new router's data rates were acceptable. What was not, however, was its Wi-Fi signal quality. In my stress test, where it was working with multiple clients and transferring data between them constantly, the router failed the test, with clients selectively being disconnected after just few hours. This happened consistently on both bands. This doesn't mean the router is useless; the clients reconnected right away, but it does mean you'll be frustrated if you use real-time applications, such as video chatting or online gaming.
In the end, I found that for the router to be worth its cost, the signal quality needs to be significantly improved. There's no use for the long range if you can't connect to it and keep the connection stable. Hopefully it will be improved via future firmware upgrades.
As for the storage support via its USB port, the performance wasn't anything notable. Via a Gigabit connection, when coupled with a portable external drive, the router registered just about 4MBps for writing and just 5MBps for reading. These were fast enough only for casual data sharing; if you want more, such as movie streaming or sharing a large amount of data between computers, a dedicated NAS server is recommended.
Conclusion
The RTA15 is an interesting router with lots of potential and could be a great choice for those who need range more than data rates. Unfortunately its unstable signal quality and the high price make it not a great buy, at least for now. Those currently having problem with Wi-Fi range, however, should still consider it, especially when new firmware has been released.
